What is new

On 4 August 2026 Booking Holdings published a statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on its results for the second quarter of 2026. The figures are reported by the company itself; we pass them on and do not verify them independently.

What the numbers are

  • Room nights for the quarter grew by 5% compared with the second quarter of 2025, to about 325 million.
  • Gross bookings grew by 9%, or about 8% at constant exchange rates, to about 51.0 billion dollars.
  • For the last four quarters, the company describes the share of room nights booked through the direct channel as the middle of the fifties percent, similar to a year earlier. No exact percentage is given.

The direct channel data covers the last four quarters, not only the second.

How to read “direct channel”

This is the most important caution. In the lines for this metric, the statement does not define the word “direct”. We should not fill that in with guesses. All that is clear is that the measure covers the whole company and describes its own booking channels.

So it is a mistake to read it as: “more than half of guests book directly with the hotel”. That is not said anywhere. For Booking, “direct” is the platform's point of view. For the owner of a small guest house, “direct” means an enquiry or reservation that reaches you without an intermediary. These are different things, and the numbers cannot be compared.

What this says about the market

The fact we can state with certainty: the largest platform is growing in room nights and in gross bookings, and this is reported by the platform itself. Platforms remain a large channel. This is neither good nor bad news for a small venue. It is simply context, not a forecast for your occupancy.

What the owner can do

  • Do not look for your own share in the report. Count your own: for the last three months, note where each enquiry came from (platform, phone, website, recommendation, message).
  • Decide what “direct” means for you. For example: the guest contacts you without an intermediary. Keep the same definition, so that you can compare yourself with last year.
  • Check what the path to a direct enquiry looks like. Can a guest on a phone see the rooms, the photos and an indicative price, and write to you or call you within two minutes?
  • Do not draw up a strategy from one figure that is someone else's. Review the company's next report again and compare the wording.

When ISKA helps

If you do not have your own website, or it does not show your rooms clearly, ISKA Website can show them with photos and a “from” price of your choice, together with an enquiry form. An enquiry is not a reservation and does not hold a room; a member of your staff confirms it. The website is offered by individual quote. It does not guarantee a number of enquiries and does not change the platforms' share.

A note on reading

One company, one document, one figure without an exact percentage. Use it as background for a conversation with your team, not as a measure for your venue.
